Ridgewood YMCA making a difference for youth in Haiti

Posted: Thursday, August 03, 2017

Since 2008, the Ridgewood YMCA, in cooperation with the YMCA d‘Haiti, has sponsored an annual sports camp in Haiti for local youths. The camp serves over 200 children ages 7 to 17 each year and is fully funded through the YMCA World Service Committee and local fundraisers organized by the Ridgewood Y.

This summer a group of volunteers affiliated with the Ridgewood YMCA returned to Haiti to help coach the youth in soccer, basketball and volleyball. The boys and girls learned skills in three sports and how to play in an organized team structure. Medals were awarded to each camper at the end of the week. The week long camp also included a cultural day trip for the kids to the Citadelle Laferrière, a mountaintop fortress, designated a national park and referred to by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World!
