Born in the White Mountains Region of New Hampshire at Ellsworth in 1918,
and raised by a mother whose published poetry was inspired by those splendid
and treacherous mountains and streams, Allan F. Avery spent most of his
life sketching and painting landscapes of the natural world. His paintings are
imaginative and spontaneous, capturing the power and movement of nature,
and have attracted the attention of art enthusiasts throughout the United
States.

Many of Allan’s early works were oil paintings, several of which are included in
this exhibition, but he preferred the watercolor medium and dedicated most of
his professional life to watercolor painting. Allan taught the adult watercolor
night class for the Ridgewood Art School at the Ridgewood Art Institute for
over forty terms, starting in 1954. He also taught the Ridgewood Adult School
watercolor class. Prior to Ridgewood he taught the watercolor class at Glen
Rock Adult School, Glen Rock NJ.
